Today I want to talk to you on a topic that the Lord had showed me on June 6, 2005. I was in college and wanted to learn more about the disobedience of Adam and Eve. I prayed to the Lord to open my eyes to see something new and this is what He showed me. I pray that you receive something out of this blog entry.
When God made Adam He gave Adam a commandment, “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die (Genesis 2:16-17).” God gives each and everyone of us commandments in our lives to follow. We should not allow anyone to cause us to disobey God. We should try our very best to follow His commandments and if we make a mistake to repent quickly of our sin. God loves it when we are honest with Him. Lying to the Lord or casting blame on someone else for your disobedience is not good.
When Adam and Eve were physically naked in the garden they were under a spiritual covering. That spiritual covering had guarded their eyes, from seeing evil. Genesis 2:25 stated, “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” That nakedness can be represented as purification or innocence. They were innocent of any sin or evil thing.
The serpent knew that they were not able to see evil and wanted to corrupt their minds. Eve going to the tree that was prohibited gave the serpent an opening to deceive her. We should never give the devil any opening in our lives to be deceived by him. He will use every opportunity to deceive us. He is just laying around waiting for us to get a little curious with the things that the Lord has commanded us not to take part of. There are some “Christians” who get a little curious about going to clubs, drinking, smoking, committing fornication, just to name a few. We sometimes get a little curious about the things that the Lord tells us to stay away and try to convince ourselves that nothing won’t happen to me if I did this or that. But the devil is a liar, something will happen to you if you sin against the Lord. Plus allowing ourselves to get into the state of mind open doors for the enemy to creep in and deceive us.
After the serpent filled Eve’s ears with lies, she saw the fruit tree a little different. Genesis 3:6 states, “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Wow do you see what I see? After the serpent spoke to Eve and deceived her, she almost stared to crave for the fruit. A strong desire to have the fruit grew within her, and that desire caused her to pick the fruit and eat. That is amazing. The devil likes to mess with our minds. If we allow him to take control of our mind he can make things pleasant to the eye that was never pleasant and he can cause us to desire the things that God told us not to touch.
After they ate the fruit their eyes were open and they noticed that they were naked. Now we know that they were naked every since they were created but how come they just noticed it? The first time they noticed they were naked was after Adam ate the fruit, which was a disobedience to the commandment God gave him. (Just for a side note disobedience is sin). Sin caused their eyes to see evil, because sin is evil. Adam and Eve now are able to see themselves and became ashamed of their nakedness being exposed. So they took fig leaves to cover themselves. They were now conscious of the fact that they had sin against God and were trying to cover it up. Many of us do that today. We fall into sin and instead of repenting right away we try to cover it up. We think that God didn’t see and we can just cover it up and no one will notice. That is not true. Everything that we do, God sees and knows about it. There is nothing we can hide from him. There are times when we can’t even hide from people around us because everything done in darkness will come to light someone day. So let us stop trying to hide from God and repent immediately of our sins.
Adam and Eve didn’t repent immediately they tired to hide behind some trees in the garden. Then God called unto Adam, “…Where are thou? (Genesis 3:9)” Adam response to God was, “… I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself (Genesis 3:10).” There are many times after we have sin against God, He will come and try to communicate with us whither through someone, in a song, through dreams, speaking to our mind, etc… Most of the time we know it is the Lord speaking to us because we are already convicted in our hearts and as soon as the Lord speaks we start shaking and wondering what is going to happen. We think we are going to get in big trouble or we are going to have to suffer big for the sin and because we are afraid of the consequences we try to run away from the presence of God. But running away never helps any situation, most time it makes your situation worst. I always wonder, what would have happened if Adam and Eve never hid themselves from God? Would they still be punished and kick out of the garden? I am sure the separation between man and God would have still occurred but would they be punished in the same manner?
After God asked Adam the second question, “…Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldnest not eat (Genesis 3:11)?” Adam answered God by casting blame on Eve. Read what he said, “And the man said, the woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I did eat (Genesis 3:12).” It is almost like he is saying, it is not my fault but Eve’s because she was the one who picked from the tree and gave me to eat. I didn’t pick from the tree, she did.
Then it continues, “And the Lord God said unto the woman, what is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, the serpent beguiled me and I did eat (Genesis 3:13).” Wow, the trend continued---casting blame. She didn’t want to suffer for the sin so she cast the blame on the serpent that deceived her. Why couldn’t they take blame for what they did? She could have said, I was curious about the tree and after standing beside the tree I was deceived by the serpent. That way she is taking responsibility for what she has done. It wasn’t totally the serpents fault; she had a certain percentage of the blame. She allowed herself to be in the position where the serpent was able to deceive her and cause her to eat of the tree. This goes to show that not every time we commit a sin, it is the serpents fault. There are times our flesh allows us to commit sin. The devil will try to deceive us but he doesn’t force us, the choice is still up to us to listen to him or to the voice of God.
The story goes on where the Lord gives each of them a fair share of the punishment. Because no one stood up and took ownership of what happened, He punished all of them. That way they all suffer for disobeying God.
Before they were cast out of the garden God, “…make coats of skins, and clothed them (Genesis 3:21).” There had to be shedding of blood for the sin they had committed. This was the initial start of offering sacrifices for our sin. God removed the sinful covering and covered them with His mercy. He could have killed them but he didn’t. He had mercy on them.
Thank God for his mercy towards us each day. There are so many times we sin against the Lord and forgives us and cover us with his Mercy, Grace, and Love. Thank you Jesus! If it wasn’t for God mercy and grace towards us we would have been dead or messed up in sin. We are not worthy of His Grace but He gives it to us anyway because He loves us.
Naked (purification, innocence) -> not ashamed
Devil tempts us and we give in
We then try to cover our sin
We stop communicating with the Lord (stop praying, reading the Bible, …)
God get concern and come to talk to us
Bring covered in sin cause us to feel ashamed and being ashamed cause pride (flesh) to rise
We blame others for our sin
On top of that we make excuses why we didn’t communicate with the Lord
Lord will have mercy towards us and remove that sinful covering
and cover us with his mercy and grace
Think about this reading and make sure you are not covering your sins and hiding from God. If you have sin, go to God and repent of your sin. You may have to suffer the consequences but at least your sin is forgiven. It is better to acknowledge that you have sin and go before the Lord right away rather than try to run and hide. Hiding from God won’t do you any good. Finally, don’t cast blame on anyone else for something you took part in. You should take responsibility for the things that you have done and ask for forgiveness.

The temptation in the is a great parallel for the tests, trials, and temptations we face today. This was a good article. What strikes me as intersting is the notion of when animals attack. In Genesis 2:19-20 God brought all of creation unto Adam and he named them. So adam had encountered the serpent and gave it a name before it attacked him with an ideology that was against God. A question arises: was it common for animals to talk? Why wasn't it alarming to Adam and Eve that a serpent was speaking to them? The text says God brought the animals to Adam to see what he would name them.
ReplyDeleteYou brought up a good point when you said the serpernt filled Eve's ears with evil causing her to think differently about the fruit.Although the text doesn't reveal her proximity to the tree; and even though it is not mentioned why Eve said if we touch the fruit we will surely die the principal of obedience was tested. We see the same 3 temptations Eve experienced in the garden with us today. 1st John 2:15-16 talks of not loving the world ,(and we should let nothing come before God). We are continually challenged with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life, just as eve was.Look Let us look closer at Gen 3:6 When the "woman saw that the tree was good for food(lust of the flesh),and that it was pleasing to the eyes(lust of the eyes),and a tree desired to make one wise( the pride of life). not only did she eat but gave to her husband with her (KJV) to eat also. They both were there , had knowledge enough of God's command and chose to disobey. Thats when Blame became the name of the game because they now knew shame. Good article Virtuous.
