Are you Completely Independent?

As I go through life I hear many people claiming to be independent. There may be different views on what requirements are needed to be qualified as an independent person. I think people get confuse on whither they are partially independent or completely independent. Some people that they are so independent that think they don’t need to depend on anyone. If you are one of these people hopefully this entry will help you to understand what you are saying whenever you utter that phrase.

I was speaking with a young lady one day and her view on being completely independent is having her own car, her own place, and a job. If that was all you need to be independent, the majority would be independent. But are those requirements good enough for a person to claim they are completely independent?

I have my own place, my own car, and a good job—Am I independent? I pay my own bills and buy whatever I need on my own. Am I partially independent or completely independent? Being independent from the Webster’s dictionary means,

“Not dependent; not subject to control by others: self-governing; not
requiring or relying on someone else; not looking to others for one’s opinions
or for guidance in conduct”

From that definition do you still consider yourself to be independent? If you have a job you are dependent on your manager or the company to give you a paycheck. Your apartment or house payment is dependent on your paycheck. Do you see the connection? The reason why you have your car or apartment/house is because of your job. If you lose your job you might lose those right along with it.

Unless you lock yourself away from everyone in this world and don’t speak to anyone, you depend on others for help, guidance, to socialize with, and for encouragement. We need each other to help make it through the day. Some people find comfort and happiness from a close friend, pet or family.

Although we would like to think we are independent and don’t need any help from anyone else and we can do it all by ourselves. That is not true. Everyone is dependent on others, whither it is customers, workers, managers, just to name a few. Therefore if you work for a company or own your own company you are depend on someone to get pay or make your business successful. If you don’t have any customers, you will go out of business. That was one of the reasons why some companies went out of business or filed for bankruptcy. They lost a lot of customers and/or whatever they were depending on to make their company grow financially. They couldn’t make it on their own they needed help from others.

Another item that people mention was having their own vehicle. Yes, it allows us to go places on our own without depending on a family member, friend, or neighbor to bring us places. It might even help us not to depend on public transportation. But does it make us completely independent? We need a gas station to fill our gas tank. For those of us who don’t change our own oil, we need a place that will change it for us. We need a place to service our car once in a while to make sure it runs well and don’t shut off on us. There are people that operate the gas station, the mechanic shop, and the dealership, without them we wouldn’t really have a vehicle for too long.

I am not saying that we have to depend on people to do every single thing in our life for us. There are ways in which we can be partially independent but we shouldn’t get too caught up in that small percentage of things we do on our own. We depend on something or someone more than 95% of the time. We may not even notice it but it is true. Take few minutes out and try to accomplish something without having to connect it with someone else or something else. Many of us can barely do that.

As Christians we are dependent on Jesus. I don’t know about you but I depend on Him for almost everything. I depend on Him to continue breathing, to move around, to drive safely on the roads, for understanding, for wisdom, for comfort, for strength, for guidance, just to name a few. Without the Lord I probably won’t be here today. If it wasn’t for the Lord healing power and protection I would have been dead a long time ago. There were many times I didn’t understand certain things and He opened up my understanding whither it was at church, reading the Bible, or even at work. There were times when I was driving in a bad weather and He would guide my vehicle from accidents and bring me home safely. If it was up to me I probably would have crashed when the roads were icy and cars were flying off the road like crazy but yet I was able to make it home alright. Thank you Jesus!

There are so many things we take for granted and think we got it all on our own. It is not like that. We all need each other to make it. If we are at church we need to work together to have a successful outcome. Whither it is with the musicians, singers, ministers, or the congregation. Even in our homes as a family we need to work together. It is almost like trying to drive a car without gas, it won’t make it very far without getting some gas.

It is the same way with us Christians we need the word of God to go forward each day. We need to maintain a personal relationship with the Lord daily to grow deeper in Him. We need to listen to the Lord and follow His commandments to continue in the right path. If we do our own thing it will lead us astray. I will ask you the question again, Are you completely independent?

To be completely independent, means that if everything in this earth was completely wiped out and there was nothing left on this earth but you. You would be able to survive. I don’t know about you but I won’t be able to survive in that situation. I am partially independent in certain situations but the majority of my life is dependent upon others and the Lord.
