Today during my afternoon devotion I was reading John chapter 5. The chapter starts off with Jesus entering into Jerusalem. It was a Sabbath day and also a feast of the Jews. Jesus came to a pool called Bethesda, which had five porches. There he saw a man that was sick for 38 years waiting for someone to help him into the pool that was troubled by an angel at a certain season. Every time the angel came down and troubled the water, whoever was first entered the pool was made whole of whatever disease.
Jesus came towards this man, and because he was God in the flesh he already knew everything about this man, such as, how long he was sick and waiting to be healed. Jesus asked this man, “Wilt thou be made whole? (John 5:6)” This man being started to make excuses to why he hasn’t entered into the pool but never answered Jesus question. The Lord knew he was sick and simply asked, do you want to be healed. There was no need for a list of excuses.
Many might criticized the man and say he should have know it was Jesus and said yes to the question right away. But let’s related this to our own lives. Many of us are in need of God to make us whole. It can be physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. All of us have an issue somewhere in our lives. We complain about the things we are going through or the pains we are suffering. As the impotent man many of us make excuses when the Lord asked us if we want to get rid of that hurt or pain. We might want to be made whole deep down inside but many of us don’t trust or believe God enough that he can do it for us.
In this story the same God who spoke things in existence, who said let there be and there was. This same God put on flesh and walked upon this earth to dwell among his people. Now this same God comes and told the impotent man to, “…Rise, take up your bed, and walk. (John 5:8)” There is power in the words of God. When he speaks even sickness has to obey. This is awesome! What a mighty God we serve.
Jesus spoke and it came to pass. After Jesus told the man to arise and walk. “And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked…. (John 5:9)” There are times I wonder why we doubt God when we know that when he speaks it will come to pass.
Many of us lack faith in God. If we don’t have faith that he can heal us or deliver us, it sometimes won’t happen. It is our faith in God that brings deliverance and healing.
Stop sitting around waiting for some preacher to come and lay hands on you. God can heal you right now wherever you are. All you have to do is say yes, I want to be made whole. You don’t have to be in church to receive a healing or deliverance from God. Many of us are suffering because we refuse to say “yes” to God.
