Everyone has their own reason and motives for seeking the Lord. There are people who only seek God for what he can give them and there are some that seek the Lord because they just want to be closer to him. The ones that seek God only for material things normally don’t understand who God really is. They sort of see him as a God that gives them things and they can go to him for whatever they want but they don’t care to really love him or serve him with their whole heart.
After Jesus fed the multitude with the five loaves of bread and two small fishes (John 6: 1- 13), they wanted to make him a king but Jesus departed into the mountains alone. Jesus was not into fame or taking glory for himself. That is a lesson we all need to learn. We should never take glory for what God has allowed us to perform. He deserves all the glory not us.
Later on in the chapter the people saw Jesus and said unto him, “…Rabbi, when camest thou hither? (John 6: 25)” Then Jesus answered them saying, “…Verily Verily, I say unto you, ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. (June 6:26)” Wow! Jesus really knows how to hit you were it hurts to make you see yourself.
Jesus knew their heart. He was not fooled that they were seeking him for who he was. They didn’t even know that hey was the Christ that was prophesied about. They were still looking for the Christ to come. Most of them thought Jesus was another great prophet.
Jesus tried to tell them why they should seek after him but they failed to understand what he was saying. Jesus told them that he is the bread of life. “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I say unto you, that ye also have seen me and believeth not. (John 6: 35-36)”
The Jews after hearing him speak murmured amongst themselves because they just couldn’t get it. They saw him as the son of Mary and Joseph, not the Christ.
“The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. And they said, is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. (John 6: 41-43)”
The Jews had a very hard time comprehending the things Jesus was saying. To them it just didn’t make any sense. They were looking at things with their physical eyes rather than the spiritual. They are not able to understand the things Jesus speak unless they understand who he is and allow the Spirit of God to reveal it to them.
For those who are only seeking Jesus for the things he can give materially. Jesus reminds us that “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life. (John 6:63)” This verse confirms that we should not seek after the material things of this world but seek for the spiritual gain. We should seek to be closer to the Lord rather than trying to see what we can get out of him.
Those people who seek after Jesus for the wrong reason is similar to the people that heard and saw what he did but didn’t not know that he was the Christ that they were waiting for. “And many of the people believed in him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done? (John 7:31)” Wow! They listen to him preach, was an eye witness to many of the miracles he perform but could not understand that Jesus was the Christ. Amazing! There are a lot of people who are in this category. Do we really know who Jesus is? Do we really know who we go to church on Sunday to worship? Wow, this is something to really think about.
Jesus continued to open their blinded eyes to who he was by saying, “…If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. (John 7:37-39)” Jesus tried to let them know that he is the living water that can give them a new life. Without the Lord in our lives we are dead or just existing. But to be alive we have to have the Spirit of God in our lives.
Think about this and see which category you fall into. Are you seeking God for thing material things he can give without really understanding who he is or are you one that is seeking God to know more about him and to have that living water within? I don’t know about you but I don’t want to just seek God for what he can give but for who he is.
