There are so many people today that are pointing figures and casting blames on everyone but themselves. They never see what they have done wrong but will list all the faults in someone else. Do you know someone like that? Are you that person?
During my afternoon devotion I was reading John chapter 8 which speaks of the woman caught in adultery. “And the scribes and the Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They said unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. (John 8:3-4)”
The scribes and Pharisees normally would have followed the law of Moses and stone such a woman but they wanted to test Jesus by asking him what he would do.
“Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou. This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. (John 8:5 – 6)”
The scribes and Pharisees were quick to judge and bring others that have sin into the light but whenever they did something wrong they would keep it in secret. Here they are exposing the woman sin and not looking at themselves.
But I love the way how the Lord knows everything. The Lord knew that they were not sinless and that they also have done wrong in their lives. So he asked them the question, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. (John 8: 7)” Wow! That really hit home because they all knew that they were guilty of their own sins.
“And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. (John 8: 9)” Jesus is the only one without sin. There are people that might try to lie themselves saying that they are sinless but no one is without sin but Jesus. That is why he was the only one still there because no one was able to stand there after hearing that question. Their conscience bothered them. Jesus knew where to hit home and how to make people turn the light on themselves and off others.
After all the men were gone Jesus forgave the woman of her sin and told her to sin no more. “…Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. (John 8:11)” That is amazing. When others condemn us Jesus forgives us.
In Matthew 7:1-5, “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thin own eye? Or how wilt thou say to they brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”
Wow! Those verses are powerful. Only God should judge, we have no power to judge someone else because we ourselves will be judge by God. Then it went on to say those who are guilty of judging your bother and not looking at yourself first is a hypocrite. You tell someone not to do something but yet you may be doing it yourself. That is not of God.
Take few minutes to think about your life and if you are guilty of looking at everyone’s faults but yours. When was the last time you turned the search light on your life? When was the last time you looked at the wrongs you did and ask for forgiveness?
There are many people who think that people in the church are hypocrites. I have heard people say that so many times about Christians. They will say they do not want to be apart of the church because Christians are hypocrites. One reason why they say this is because we are quick to tell them how much they are in sin but we fail to look at our own lives. They don’t want people exposing them in public and telling them how much of a sinner they are. That sort of attitude pushes away people from the church. No one is perfect and we should think we are better than someone else. We were all sinners until God washed us.

Think about the message I am trying to convey to you today. Before you open your mouth to condemn someone look at yourself in the mirror first.
