Jesus sat down and spoke the parable of the sower to his disciples and the crowd that followed him. The parable of the sower was an analogy of someone spreading the word of God and how people will react to it. Jesus was letting them know that not everyone that hears the word of God will receive it the same way.
After Jesus spoke the parable many people were confused to what it really meant. When he was alone the disciples came and asked him what the parable meant. And Jesus began to explain it to them.
The sower went out to sow:
“The sower soweth the word. (Mark 4:14)”
Fell by the Way Side:
“And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. (Mark 4: 15)”
Fell on Stony Ground:
“ And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately received it with gladness; and have no root in themselves, and so endured but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. (Mark 4: 16 -17)”
Fell among Thorns:
“And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choked the word and it becometh unfruitful. (Mark 4: 18 -19)”
Fell on Good Ground:
“And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and received it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. (Mark 4:20)”
After reading the parable I was able to understand why some people automatically reject the word of God when they hear it; why some people start off on fire for the Lord and later on die spiritually; and why some people slowly accept the word of God and grow continually. I once heard someone said that things that gradually grow are things that typically last longer. When we rush into things without a full understanding, we might have a temporal excite and drive to go forward but when hard times comes, we will be the first to quit. So be careful what you allow yourself to rush into. Be patient and allow the Lord to direct your path.
We can take this and match it up to our lives or match it up to the people that we spread the word of God with. There will be some days when we do our best to spread the word and the person might not accept it right away. We shouldn’t get discourage because we are just the one sowing the seed and God will do the watering and who is to be save will be save. Many are call but few are chosen. There were many seeds sown but few of them were able to bare fruits in the end.
“Hearken; behold, there went out a sower to sow; and it came to pass, as he
sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it
up. And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had not root, it withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and
brought forth, some thirty and some sixty and some a hundred. (Mark 3 – 8)”
